How to film for the editor.
A few habits make every reel come back better. None of them take longer to film.
Your takes
-
Read the script top to bottom, then again
One continuous take is best: the editor never cuts in the middle of a sentence, so whole runs give it the most to choose from.
-
Trip on a line? Say it again right away
Say the whole line again, from its first word. The editor keeps your best take of each line and drops the rest.
-
Don't rush the start
Press record, breathe, then talk. The wait before you start is cut out.
-
A quiet room
Background noise makes pauses hard to cut cleanly. If a take is too noisy, the reel's page tells you so.
-
Vertical, at eye level
Film upright on your phone, the way the reel will play.
What you show
-
B-roll: hold it steady for a few seconds
The first moment of a clip is skipped, while the phone settles. Give each shot a few steady seconds after that.
-
Screen recordings at normal speed
Tap through the app the way the script describes. The editor shows each step as you say it.
-
Keep your script and notes out of shot
No notes, open tabs or notifications on screen. The editor looks for them before the reel is delivered, but it's best when there's nothing to find.
Then upload it all
Up to 12 files and 15 minutes of footage for one reel: takes, b-roll and screen recordings together. Add the script and the brief, and press Make.
